JUNE 2021 : 3 STARS. When Matt and Imogen move out of the city, they're hoping for a much-needed fresh start. Matt throws himself into his new job, but Imogen struggles to adjust to life in the suburbs. So when she meets Nancy, a neighbor, things are looking up but when she makes a shocking accusation, Imogen doesn't know who to trust. This isn't the first time Matt has found himself on the wrong end of a false accusation.Previous books by this author was his Alex Madison 3-book series (Trance, Pain & Mirror); books 1&2 received 5 stars and book 3 received 3 stars because there was a lack of refreshing the characters past. Right at the beginning of this book, I could feel the tension from the unknown secrets. Early on, the premise of this book was obvious though the angle was a little different. I enjoyed it. THEN I got to the end! There is an ending but I felt the ball was just dropped. No spoilers are included in this review for the benefit of other readers who want to try this. This is actually a surprisingly good thriller considering it's a 99 cent book. The plot involves married couple Matt and Imogen moving from London to a quiet village to start their lives anew. They soon encounter their overly friendly neighbor Nancy, and drama ensues. It's a little slow, but overall contains some interesting characters and is written by a talented author.Couple of things brought the rating down for me. The story is written with chapters alternating between Imogen, Matt, and Nancy. Strangely enough, Imogen and Nancy's parts are all first person POV while everything with Matt is third person. Not sure why the author went this way, as it would have been great to get more of Matt's thoughts as things start to happen to him. It's also a very predictable story which takes a lot of the suspense away.The biggest issue IMO is the much hyped twist. This is a classic example of an author throwing a twist ending in just to have one, rather then the book needing one. While this is an enjoyable read, there's a lot of sadness and emotional pain in this book and despite that, the author set things up beautifully for a happy ending, or at least a shot at one, for the protagonists. Then out of nowhere he throws in a horribly depressing twist which makes for no good outcome for any of the characters. Instead of finishing the book satisfied, I just felt dejected. Not a great way to encourage your readers to look at your other work.
