and this writer needs one. The editor is ok, but to me, there's just far too many facial gestures and filler. From the stretches, to the wine sipping (that went on and on) what happened here is the writer fell victim to an inattentive editor. When a writer puts their take on a character with 'comma' like gestures it's distracting filler. This kind of allowance significantly slows down the narrative. I didn't get that with Scorpio because there is a reason we need to know his pain in detail: Reacher was responsible for it. The editor needs to be more critical in terms of which gestures can stay and import reason vs just being visual for visual sake (in film that's known as 'over acting.) Be sure of what could stay and what should go. Highlight repletion on the galley (couldn't hurt) but most certainly the editor hindered the story's overall pacing. I am midway through and debated putting it down, but I adored THE MIDNIGHT LINE. I have read it three or four times so I want to see what happens to Scorpio. (I've read all of Reacher, each book, multiple times.) Please take this in the spirit in which it is given; the editor needs to be very mindful of what you're doing as an author. When an author decides to be a 'director' so to speak, the editor may want to pull out a red pen and cut. All the best, bb ps and I had to edit this, so as you can see I take my own advice. Diane must be a great fisherman: calm, patient yet knowing just when to set the hook! In this episode there were a few times when I almost got sucked into nap mode. You know, needless scene setting, building story background! And then “Pow!” The hook is set and the battle begins! And this is where she almost lost me: too many long such scenes. And too many characters. But true to Diane Capri, when she hits the action switch, hold on to your hats! And when the action-train gets rolling you will be glad you stayed around! So congrats Diane... keep the ball moving.
